What is the average size of a pool?

While we install pools of all shapes and sizes, the average size we see for residential pools tends to be about 15ft x 30ft in size. That being said, if you’re trying to choose which size is best for you, we’d advise considering the following factors:

  • How much space do you actually have? – Check your property survey, as there may be set backs in which you can’t build, or in which there may be restrictions. While this may vary by area (City, County, and/or HOA), here are some common things to look for, and if you can build in them:
    • Building Set Back Lines (B.L.) – most of the time, yes, but often with height restrictions
    • Public Utility Easements (P.U.E.) – no
    • Drainage Easements (D.E.) – no
    • Overhead Power Lines – must maintain 10ft from waters edge
    • Underground Power Lines – must maintain 5ft from water edge
    • Septic Systems/Tanks (OSSF) – varies, but typically 5ft to 10ft depending on type of system and structure
  • How do you want to use the pool? – Something we often advise people to consider when it comes to size and design, is how are you intending to use the pool, or what uses or features do you most want to prioritize?
    • Tanning Ledge? – Great for laying out and soaking up some rays, or creating a shallow-water play area for younger kids to play on! However the average size is about 6ft in width, which can quickly take up space in the main body of a smaller pool.
    • Volley Ball? – You’ll likely want to factor a for a little more space, not only so that there’s room to play, but also so you can incorporate a “sport pool” depth, that is having shallow ends on either ends of the pool, with the deepest part of the pool being in the middle (so that both teams have a shallow area to play in). The draw back however is that if the pool to small, the ramp from shallow to deep will be too extreme/quick, thereby making the pool not only awkward to traverse, but also non-code compliant.
    • Lap Swimming? – Width may not be as important as over all length. You may additionally want to consider making the main swimming space uninterrupted of other features such as steps, leges and benches, and possibly “boxing them out” of the main body of the pool if they are still features you wish to incorporate. If you’re limited on space, consider swim jets!
    • Jumping and Diving? – you may not always require as much space as the aforementioned sport pool does in order to achieve a deeper depth while still maintaining code-compliance.
    • Off-Season Swimming? – We go more into depth with heating and cooling options later in the Equipment related FAQs, however one thing to consider is the energy usage and efficiency in heating (or cooling) your pool. Smaller pools will take a lot less time and energy to heat/cool vs larger pools.
